Estimation Puzzle Framework Quant Interview Guide
Estimation puzzle framework quant interview guide for defining targets, decomposing inputs, sanity checks, uncertainty, and communication.
Candidates practicing Fermi-style puzzle communication.
Define the target quantity
An estimation puzzle should start with the exact quantity being estimated, the geography or population if any, and the time period. Ambiguity compounds quickly.
Decompose into estimable factors
Break the target into factors you can reason about, such as population times frequency times unit size. Keep units visible throughout.
Concrete example
To estimate annual spending on a product, split into number of buyers, purchases per buyer, and price per purchase, then sanity-check the total.
Use ranges honestly
A Fermi answer is rarely precise. Give a range, name the largest uncertainty, and say which input would most improve the estimate.
Common mistakes
Candidates often invent exact facts or hide weak assumptions. A stronger answer makes assumptions explicit and checks whether the final magnitude is plausible.
Practice the pattern
