Fermi Estimation Range Building

Fermi estimation range building guide for point estimates, lower bounds, upper bounds, dominant uncertainty, and range communication.

Candidates who give estimates that are too narrow or too precise.

Start with a center

A point estimate gives the center of your answer. The range then communicates how uncertain the assumptions are around that center.

Build lower and upper cases

Choose conservative and aggressive values for the main uncertain driver. Avoid changing every assumption at once unless the prompt asks for a broad bound.

Concrete example

If estimated daily demand is 100,000 but the usage-rate assumption is weak, a reasonable range might be 60,000 to 160,000 rather than exactly 100,000.

Explain the range width

A wide range is not a failure if uncertainty is real. State which assumption would narrow the range if more information were available.

Common mistakes

Candidates often give a narrow range to sound confident. Calibration improves when ranges honestly reflect uncertainty and are checked against outcomes over time.
