Memoryless Property Interview Questions

Memoryless property interview prep for geometric and exponential waiting times, fresh-start reasoning, and common misuse.

Candidates preparing for waiting-time and arrival-time probability prompts.

What memoryless means

Memorylessness means the remaining waiting-time distribution does not depend on how long you have already waited without success.

Geometric example

For repeated independent coin flips, if you have not seen heads yet, the expected additional wait for the first head is the same as it was at the start.

Exponential intuition

In continuous time, the exponential distribution has the same fresh-start property under its model assumptions. The past waiting time does not age the process.

What it does not mean

Memorylessness does not mean success is due after a long wait. It says the conditional distribution of the future is unchanged by the elapsed wait.

Interview use

Use memorylessness when the setup explicitly supports independent repeated trials or an exponential waiting-time model. Otherwise, state the assumption before using the shortcut.

Common mistakes

Candidates often apply memorylessness to all waiting-time problems. Many real or constructed waiting times have aging, deadlines, or changing rates.
